Community Service Essay
My volunteer work is a little different than everyone else’s. I didn’t have to go very far to find my work. Every day of my life I volunteer my time and take a risk for others. I am proud to say that I am a volunteer Williamsville Fire Fighter and a certified New York State Emergency Medical Technician.
My volunteer work with the fire hall is not work done to help any specific individual. My community is who I work for. I don’t have a specific duty that I must accomplish each day. If no calls are coming across my pager, then I consider my day an accomplished day because I know that fire and health-wise, my community is well.
The biggest challenge for me that I have come across in the field of fire fighting is proving myself worthy of the respect that others before me, in a traditionally male-oriented field, receive. There are many old-school thoughts and beliefs that females can’t handle the pressure and call of duty that men can in the fire service, but I have proven myself and have shown as well that this is a service that all can provide, men and women alike.
There isn’t enough time in the world to speak of all that I have learned from volunteering in the fire department. Not only have I learned how to save lives and fight fires, but I also learned what it is like to be a hero. I have learned everything from perseverance, respect and responsibility, to mental, emotional and physical strength. When working in the fire service, you and your fellow fire fighters are a team. There is no I. If you think single mindedly someone will get hurt in our line of work. We all learn from each other and work together to better our community and we can’t have it any other way. This is not a one person job but a job of many.
My favorite sector of the department is the medical side. It’s one thing to be able to fight a fire, but it is another thing to roll up on a rig, and, facing a very ill person, use your learned skills and knowledge to assist that person and later find out that you are one of part of a team that saved his or her life.
The feeling I get when I serve my community is incredible. There is no better reward than someone really looking into your eyes and saying “Thank you.” I don’t do this for money or for the recognition; I volunteer my time and my skills because I feel it makes me a better person.
Ever since I joined the fire department 4 years ago, I have 100% changed the way I view myself. I never knew how knowledgeable I really was and how strong of a person I am inside and out. When I was younger I never dreamed of being part of a fire hall, but now that I’m in it, I can’t imagine life without it.
I wish more people knew how great it feels to help your community. I am part of a committee at the hall that gets together to figure out ways to increase our participation number. There will never be enough volunteers, it’s impossible. I encourage people all the time to get involved, and it doesn’t have to be full time with a fire hall. You could take a CPR class because you never know when someone may need your help.
I will always remember my community service experience. It would be impossible for me to forget. The fire hall is a part of who I am. No matter where I end up when I’m older, I know that I will always be ready to help. My free time is meant for my community and it will forever be like that.
